Piecing It Together Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Piecing It Together is just 20 minutes north of downtown Pittsburgh. Owned by Johanna Blanarik, this shop has been part of the surrounding community for the past 30 years, and quilts and bears made on monthly Community Service days have gone to over 1,000 recipients and counting.

The shop features a long arm system that can be rented by the hour, after taking a class on how to use it properly. There is also an Accuquilt Go in house that can be used (after training) to cut fabrics purchased in the shop. Notice all of the samples available! If you need inspiration, just walk around and look. Some are class samples, and many have kits available.

There is also a great selection of fabrics, from prints to panels to batiks, totaling 3,000+ bolts. If you are looking for something specific, Miss Johanna will order it for you. She also carries Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, and of course a selection of fat quarters. If you need a fat quarter that you don’t see already cut, it will be cut for you. Many are stored near the bolts they came from, so check out the cubbies as well as the big bin. If you applique, there is a basket of scrap pieces from which to sort and choose.

Has your stash gotten out of hand, or did someone will you fabric you simply don’t like? This shop buys fabric, and resells at a discount. If you are looking for an older fabric, check out this area. You just might get lucky!

While you’re wandering the shop, look for the Row by Row samples. Piecing It Together was the national winner for their design in 2015.

There are also classes – check out the schedule online. These range from Beginning Sewing and Quilting to Block of the Month. There is also a quarterly Potluck Dinner, where folks all make the same block, and then there is a drawing at the dinner – winner takes all of the blocks home! If you want to learn a specific skill, one on one classes can be scheduled.

Do stop and greet Chloe, the new shop mascot – very gently! She’s getting used to being the mascot, so give her time to get to know you. She doesn’t bite, but if she’s startled she will bark!

Plan to spend around an hour here checking out all of the samples and fabric.
