Less than three miles from I76/ 224 in Barberton, Ohio, southwest of Akron, is Coburn’s Quilting Plus. Owned by Terry and Joyce Coburn, this is primarily a long arm shop, but the quilts on display make it worth a visit. Joyce is in charge of the quilting, while Terry does 16 needle commercial embroidery.
While the shop doesn’t carry bolts and yardage, there are a lot of fat quarter bundles, Charm Packs, Layer Cakes, Scrap Bags, and Moda kits. The shop is centrally located between three fabric stores, so the long arm business keeps really busy. There is also a selection of threads for embroidery and machine quilting. While you are there, don’t forget to say hello to the mascot!
Stroll to the back of the shop and admire this stunning example of Grandma’s Flower Garden. It was made by the owner’s grandmother, is all hand stitched and hand quilted, and the hexies are 3/4″ across. I have no idea how many there are – I would estimate it is in the thousands – and this lady made more than one of these a year!
This beautiful antique quilt is also on display – the date is January 2, 1892. It is a family heirloom, and I was really appreciative that it is in the store to be shared with her customers.
The shop has two long arm machines. One is for customer rental, after training, and the other is for the shop’s quilting business.
The shop makes between 100 and 150 T-shirt Memory Quilts every year. Clothing alterations and custom sewing are also available.
