Forty miles north of Detroit and about seven miles from I94 is a bustling quilt shop called Time Remembered Quilting. Owner Barbara Ann Fiantaco has taken over three spaces in the strip mall that houses her shop: one for fabric sales, one for a classroom, and a third for the two long arm machines used to quilt for her customers.
The shop’s current goal is to maintain what they have and do a good job of it, and talking with customers they are on the right track. One described the shop as her “happy place,” and that certainly fits the atmosphere I found when I was there.
Do you enjoy batiks? Check out the entire side wall of the shop, front to back, that displays over 1,000 (Yes, ONE THOUSAND!) different batiks, sorted by color just to make your job a little easier. I have never seen so many collected in one location, and they are beautiful.
For Grunge fans, there are all of the normal semi-solids. Then there is another rack with a selection of polka dot grunge. Check out the shades available and let your imagination run wild! I find myself wondering if a shaded offset log cabin fading light to dark would be just too many polka dots… But pink to yellow to blue to dark pink to dark blue – hmmm.
Of course, there are also prints and blenders to be found. I was tempted by the Kaffe Fasset and other large scale prints that I love to Stack-n-Whack, but I behaved – at least for now. I know where they are if I decide I need them! I will confess to photographing some bolt ends so I know what to order by mail.
Classes at Time Remembered Quilting cover a wide range of interests. There is a Pajama Party where you can come in your PJ’s and sew from 9 am to 9 PM. One of their teachers, who calls himself “Man Sewer,” teaches both classes and long arm usage. (Yes, he’s male!) There are also scheduled Sit and Sew times, where you can work on projects with friends old and new or get help if you need it. The shop also hosts Quilting Retreats. Check out the current class schedule online to see what strikes your fancy.
Time Remembered also sells a line of Eversewn Sewing Machines. These are lightweight for easy portability. Make sure to check these out as a travel machine while you are in the shop.
