Twenty-seven miles north of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and tucked away in an industrial Park, Rockin’ Bobbins Quilt Shop is the home of 3000 bolts of fabric and a beam style long arm machine. Owned by Susie Knappenberger, the shop is in an industrial park to make room for the long arm.
Google Maps will send you around to the back of the building – I think they are expecting delivery trucks to be looking for the loading dock. Make a U-turn and go back one street, turn left, and go about halfway down the buildings. The shop is on the left; look for the sign in the picture, and you are there!
The beam long arm is amazing. Quilts are done laying flat rather than rolled, so if you want a pattern that goes edge to edge on the quilt, this is the place to go. I have for a long time wanted to quilt an eleven circle labyrinth as the stitching on a quilt. This machine can do that for me as soon as I get the top done!
Don’t miss all of the fabric. What most companies would use for individual offices, Rockin’ Bobbins uses for different types of fabric. This is much more than a long arm service. There is a room that is just blenders. Another room has wide backs – over 300 different ones – and more blenders. Wander on to look at prints and batiks. Go upstairs to the sale room. While you’re looking, check out the kits that are available in every room.
Do you enjoy creating with Layer Cakes? There are dozens to chose from, as well as Jelly Rolls and Charm Packs. There is also a selection of rulers and a wall of patterns. I believe I spent almost two hours in this shop, and I’m sure there are some things I missed.
I’ve mentioned before that I am addicted to Stack-n-Whack. Check out the shelves of large scale prints that would make fans – or diamonds – or a One Block Wonder – or… Let your imagination go and see what you can come up with from the selections available!
