This is the second stop on my trip into Canada. Owned by Cheryl Barber, Rose Cottage Quilt Shoppe is a stand alone building along County Road 10 in Ontario, about 15 miles from Detroit’s Ambassador Bridge entry into Ontario.
Be careful when entering the address into your GPS – the mailing address is different from the GPS address. Both are listed below.
One of the neat features of the shop is Finish Up Friday, your chance to come into the shop and sew for the day, get help with a project you my be stuck upon, or simply spend the day sewing with friends old and new.
Check out the sampler on the right. This is what is made during the Beginning Quilting class. Classes are limited to five or six students, so each can get individual attention and really get comfortable with the skills being taught. Notice that the sampler covers all of the basics – curves, triangles, a little bit of applique, and so on.
Rose Cottage also offers kits, jelly rolls, and pre-cuts, but the main focus is teaching and building a love and appreciation for the art of making beautiful quilts.
Canada’s sesquicentennial was in 2017, and the quilt on the left was the Block of the Month for that year. Patterns and kits are still available – go into the classroom and admire this quilt while you’re in the shop. The photograph really doesn’t do it justice. Kits may have different prints than the original, but the red and white theme is carried through.
And then there is the fabric… Shelved by designer, wall to wall and on islands in the middle. And above the fabric – quilts and samples of 100 things to make with the fabric. I spent a fair amount of time just looking from shelf to shelf, with ideas boiling over. This was one of the harder shops to leave with budget intact! As I’ve said before, I love Stack-n-Whack, and there are a lot of fabrics to choose from. Some even have a smaller scale companion print with them – wonderful!
Don’t miss the selection of woolens, and beyond them the Children’s Room – dozens of very child friendly prints, as well as stuffed animals. Note the dark curtains over the windows to keep the fabrics from fading – not that I think many of them hang around long enough for this to happen!
Finally, check out the sewing machines. Rose Cottage is a dealer for both Bernina and Brother machines, and has a technician on staff for repairs and tune-ups as needed.
They also provide long-arm services, with a turn time normally of three to four days.
There is a fairly extensive class and club schedule, including Embroidery Club, Scrap Club (all pieces under 5 inches), Kimber Bell Club, and of course Block of the Month. Plan to spend at least an hour in this shop.
